Animation-Ready Character Design: Principles for Movement

Designing a character for a still illustration is a different discipline than designing one for animation. An animation-ready character must not only look good but also function correctly when rigged and moved by an animator. Whether you're working in 2D or 3D, these principles will ensure your designs transition smoothly into motion.

1. Clarify the Silhouette and Form

In animation, the silhouette is everything. A character needs to be recognizable even when in motion or at a distance. Avoid overwhelming the design with intricate details that will become "noise" when the character is moving fast. Focus on clear, geometric shapes that define the character's primary volume.

2. Designing for the Rig

Consider how the character's joints will bend. In 2D animation, this means clear separation of limbs at the pivot points. In 3D, it requires "loops" of geometry around joints like elbows and knees to allow for clean deformation without collapsing.

• Joint Placement: Mark where the elbows, knees, and waist will bend.
• Volume Consistency: Ensure limbs maintain their thickness throughout a bend.
• Overlap and Straights: Use the contrast between straight lines and curved lines to suggest weight and muscle.

3. Line Weight and Consistency

For hand-drawn or puppet-based 2D animation, consistent line weight is crucial. If your character has varying line thicknesses, it becomes a nightmare to maintain frame-by-frame. Opt for a unified line style that can be easily replicated or automated in software like Moho or Toon Boom Harmony.

4. The Turnaround Sheet

An animation-ready character needs a professional turnaround sheet showing the character from the front, side, and 3/4 view. This ensures that different animators can keep the character "on model" regardless of the angle.

• Level Lines: Use horizontal guides to ensure features (eyes, belt, knees) align across different views.
• Simplify Back Details: Don't forget the back view, but keep it functional for the rig.

Conclusion

Animation is about simplification for the sake of performance. By building your character with their future movement in mind, you save countless hours in the production pipeline and ensure your creation looks as good in flight as it does on a page.
